Drug and Alcohol Evaluation

There’s a drug and alcohol evaluation to assess your substance use, its impact on your health and functioning, and what level of care you may need. The evaluator documents findings in a report you can use for legal, employment, or clinical purposes.

You may be asked to get an evaluation by a court, employer, probation officer, school, or licensing board, or you may seek one yourself because you want treatment guidance or to meet program requirements. Patients often receive referrals from primary care providers, behavioral health clinicians, and family members. You can request an evaluation at any time to start treatment planning.

Typical providers include licensed counselors and therapists, licensed clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, addiction medicine physicians, and certified alcohol and drug counselors. Costs vary by provider and location. A single evaluation often ranges from low-cost community clinic fees to private-practice rates; typical out-of-pocket costs can be roughly $50 to $300. Insurance may cover part or all of the evaluation if it is billed as a behavioral health assessment; some providers offer sliding-scale fees, payment plans, or low-cost community options. If the evaluation is required by a legal or employment entity, you may be responsible for the full fee.
