Rehab for Those Who Are Ready

Rehabilitation is probably the most important part of addiction treatment. Substance abuse is no longer a silent epidemic, and it is one that has its hands on every race, sex, and social class in the United States (and abroad). If you have a loved one in the grip of addiction, do not give up hope. With encouragement and support, addiction does not have to take hold forever. Keep reading for information about how to help someone you care about to choose the treatment that is right for them.

About Addiction and Rehabilitation

Addiction is a sadly common disease, and like many chronic illnesses, it only gets worse over time and without treatment. According to UPMC, people become dependent on chemical substances because drugs and alcohol change the way the brain responds to their presence. Substance use has been proven to alter the crucial decision-making area of the brain and, with long-term exposure, can cause cognitive damage.

Although addiction does not discriminate, some demographics are at a higher risk. Young people, along with low-income individuals and minorities, for example, often succumb to drugs and alcohol because of excessive stress. They may not have the education or opportunity to learn how to cope with their problems in a healthy way or may grow up believing that drug use is perfectly normal. Unfortunately, many addicts do not have the means to receive treatment.

Veterans are another group that suffers from addiction in higher numbers than the general population. Approximately 20 percent of veterans will suffer from substance use disorder, and many of those are also diagnosed with PTSD. Even more alarmingly, more than 10 percent of homeless people in the US are veterans, and more than three-quarters are currently in the throes of alcohol or drug addiction or other mental health issues.

If the loved one you are trying to help is a veteran, they likely have access to care that others do not. The VA offers help for veterans who develop an addiction as a secondary service connection, meaning that the drug or alcohol problem did not arise directly from their service. Older veterans may be eligible for substance abuse treatment through Medicare. Help them look over their policy or call their agent to find out if addiction is covered under their current plan.

Choosing Rehab

When it is time to select a treatment program, there are many options. Typically, the first step is detoxification, which often takes place in a supervised medical setting that allows the addict to get the drugs or alcohol out of their system while being treated for the side effects of withdrawal. Next is inpatient treatment, which is an intense type of care that can last anywhere from a few weeks to six months or more. Inpatient care is carried out away from home in a supervised setting where patients have access to the drug, nutrition, and mental health counseling.

Residential Rehabilitation treatment centers are similar to inpatient programs. They are likewise in a structured environment, although it will be less clinical in nature. An inpatient program allows the addict to remove themselves from temptation and learn how to make better decisions. For those who cannot afford around-the-clock care, many rehabilitation treatment centers offer outpatient programs. The addict lives at home and participates in daily group or individual counseling sessions. They are often required to check in with a sponsor or another individual every day.

The type of treatment center your loved one chooses will be based on many factors, with cost, location, and quality of care is the most important.

Helping somebody that you love overcome addiction requires patience, but it also requires an understanding of what they are going through and how they got there. Once you understand a bit more about addiction, you’ll be in a better position to approach them with compassion and can help them find a path toward recovery.
